Specifically the 2-out-of-5 dekany with factors 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9. The dekany contains five different 6-note subsets called hexanies. In this piece of music, each section uses a different hexany. You will hear that each hexany has its own clear and distinct colour. A 1:3:5:7:9 drone plays throughout to underlie the melodies. The fascinating thing is, the resulting dekany doesn't contain 1/1, therefore the melodies never use 1/1 from the drone and therefore don't quite "come home"; they always float on top in a harmonious way. The Korg Monologue is a monophonic analogue synthesiser which allows for custom "microtonal" tunings. I set up one tuning for each of the five hexanies, and then assigned those tunings to a series of saved patches. To perform the piece and its modulating through hexanies, I simply needed to perform my way through this series of pre-prepared patches. Each scale is linearly mapped to the keyboard, such that 6 steps on the keyboard is heard as one octave. This way, the Monologue's tiny keyboard provides a generous 4 octaves of range! Because only one voice can be played at a time on a monophonic synth, I multitracked the drone in my DAW. The five drone parts were then carefully looped so they would span the entire performance. My melodies were then played through a network of delay lines. So you'll hear apparently tens of overlapping lines simultaneously. The fundamental of this tonal structure is tuned to 64 Hz. Later I discovered, because of the way the maths work out, that 432 Hz is part of this tuning. But before you sigh-matic, this music will not regrow amputated limbs or heal DNA. Though it's pretty meditative so maybe you can cure insomnia or do some yoga while listening. 00:00 Murmurations 1 3 5 9 06:26 Murmurations 3 5 7 9 14:18 Murmurations 1 3 7 9 22:41 Murmurations 1 5 7 9 29:17 Murmurations 1 3 5 7 35:29 Murmurations 1 3 5 9 Reprise If you are listening on Spotify or other streaming services then you'll notice the track names are different to what is shown above. That's because the correct names that I submitted were rejected for reasons that were never clearly explained to me. The correct names are shown on Bandcamp.
